Anne Bonnet. Une artiste sur le fil de l’abstraction
21/11/26 > 28/03/27
Anne Bonnet (1908–1960) is a significant figure in 20th-century Belgian painting and a co-founder of the group *La Jeune Peinture Belge* (Young Belgian Painting). Initially a figurative artist influenced by Animism, she gradually evolved toward an abstract style in which geometry, light, and landscape played central roles. Her travels, the war, and her surroundings fuelled this evolution.
Active and acclaimed during her lifetime, she participated in numerous groups, exhibitions, and projects, and also explored textile art. Yet, her work remains less well-known today than that of some of her contemporaries—particularly given an art history that has long been less favourable to women artists. The 2022 publication of the first monograph dedicated to her work has helped renew interest in her career.
The exhibition (“Anne Bonnet. An artist on the thread of inspiration”) offers an opportunity to rediscover the diversity of her practice and her role in the Belgian art scene of the 1940s and 1950s. Paintings, textile works, and archival materials are presented in dialogue with works by her contemporaries, evoking the artistic networks in which she moved—extending beyond *La Jeune Peinture Belge*. The exhibition also examines the connections between painting and textiles, her involvement in various groups, and the place of women in art history, while challenging traditional perceptions of an artist who long remained in the shadow of her male colleagues.
