Incursions. Ou la persistance de l’ordinaire Benoit Bastin – Barbara Geraci

The works of Benoit Bastin and Barbara Geraci are modelled, written and drawn from their direct environment, that close to home, the workplace, the studio, the stories that are told in the family, the museum too, everything that builds up a life without our paying any attention to it. It’s in the everyday that the plastic gesture bursts in, so that every day, from our silent rituals, emerge the intimate noises of our lives, their underlying political functions or their societal injunctions. For the duration of the exhibition, it is the routine moments and their customary gestures that assert themselves on the walls.
In both creations, whether our ordinary gestures are accentuated, purified or even erased, the aim is to pay new attention to what goes on every day. This fascination with the everyday, shared by both artists, permeates their work. It can be read in the titles of their works, understood in the words they use, cut out on paper, heard in interviews, composed in installations or revealed when moving furniture.
Through the visual research of these two artists, the ordinary bursts into the museum. It’s a way of calling on us all to take a wiser look at our surroundings, so that once we’re out of the exhibition space, our gestures become untied and messy.
Benoit Bastin and Barbara Geraci are inviting us to observe the sensitive but also the political that infiltrate our habits, back at home, in our routines, on our doorsteps or in our workplaces.
